I don't know whether to thank Tamara of View From The Porch or send her hate-mail. On the plus side she's got me back into reading books, on the negative side, do you have any idea how much books cost? In rough terms, "A lot". Continue reading...

Meditations on Violence by Rory Miller is a great book. Rather than discussing specific techniques, Miller discusses the intellectual and emotional components of violent encounters. He has spent over a decade working in prisons, so he certainly has extensive experience in the area of violence having been in hundreds of violent encounters with some of the worst criminals on the planet. My first knife was one of those cheap, nasty Swiss Army Knife clones. I loved it when I first got it, but I grew out of it and it was such low quality that it put me of the whole idea of "Swiss Army Knives". I'm pleased to say I'm now cured of this dislike; I recently saw a cheap ($22.45) Victorinox Tinker on eBay. I'm glad I did; it's currently my very favourite knife, though so far I've avoided the temptation to name it "Vera". :-) Continue reading...

I watched this movie last night, and unfortunately I must say that I didn't really enjoy it. It billed itself as a "black comedy", and while it certainly succeeded on the first part, calling it a comedy is really a bit of a stretch, it simply wasn't all that funny. Don't get me wrong, I actually quite enjoy a good black comedy (for instance Plots with a View), this movie just didn't do it for me. For sure there was some funny moments, the "reading" of the will was hilarious for instance, but these couple of scenes where ultimately let down by the rest of the film. In summary: if your looking for a black comedy watch Plots with a View instead.
This movie tries to get away with it's lousy plot by being an "action" movie, and while the action scenes where technically brilliant, they where only around a third of the film. That means the majority of the time was spent on plot, and the plot... well lets just say it could be better. This movie has several plot holes and instances of plot induced stupidity. Note that from here on this review may contain spoilers. Continue reading...

I finished C.S. Lewis' "The Screwtape Letters" last night, I read it straight through in two sittings and was disappointed when it was over. You should go straight to the library and get it out, or buy if you want, I've got the library's copy, but I'll be keeping my eye out for a copy I can add to my bookcase. This book would have to be one of the best books I've read in the last couple of years. (Admittedly if your not a Christian you may not enjoy it as much, but it is still probably worth a read) Continue reading...
