I've been thinking about self-improvement recently, and I've come up with ten things. Basically it's ten attributes, mostly skills, that I wish I had, but don't have, and the steps I can take in the short term that I can take to move towards these goals. So without further ado, "I want to":
- Run a half-marathon (21KM) in a decent time (less than 2 hours). For this I'll continue the C25K training plan.
- Achieve a moderate level of strength; 30 pushups, 60 situps, and 10 pullups should do as a start (based on the Australian Army's Commando Physical Fitness Entry Requirements). For this I'll do calisthenics, mostly concentrating on core and arm strength.
- Be at a half-decent martial artist. For this I will look into what schools there are near by and join one.
- Shoot a rifle and pistol accurately. For this I'll start with getting a license and joining a club.
- Have a decent knowledge of First Aid. For this I'll sign up for an Apply First Aid course, probably from St. John.
- Be a member of the SES. This one's pretty straight forward: ring up the local unit, and ask about joining.
- Have a basic working knowledge of at least one non-English language. (Probably Spanish to start) For this I'll see what books I can find at the second-hand bookstore, and start doing regular lessons.
- Make a decent profit on the share market (better than 5% annually). For this I'll look into getting some books on the subject, and experiment with investing strategies on paper.
- Publish a short story, at least in one of the online magazines, but print would be better. For this I will continue working on what I'm writing now, and also think about other ideas, and look into places where I can publish.
- Post regularly here (at least once a week). It's rare that I don't have at least one idea of something to write about during a week, so I just need to discipline myself to actually write the things I think of. (I'll probably be posting semi regular updates on my progress with these; such updates will not count)
