The Question of Suffering

Welcome to my new series¹ of "Stumper Questions for Christians that are Actually Easy to Answer". Yep, this is it folks all those questions you've always been to afraid to think about because if you do you might be forced to abandon your faith in Jesus, sort of like how you've abandoned mathematics because you don't know what 20 Log5 equals. Oh no, can't possibly believe in Jesus if there is even the slightest little unanswered question about God, the Bible, or ancient Egyptian construction techniques remaining unanswered. Why yes, this series will be written "tongue-in-cheek", so to speak, why do you ask?

Alrighty enough introduction, on to the first question:

Why does God allow bad things to happen to good people?

Good people...? Wait let me think, I'm sure the Bible had something to say about good people. I know, what about Romans 3:23 "... for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God". What??? Surely not? But that means that "No one is good--except God alone." [Mark 10:18c] Well that sucks, looks like there isn't actually any "good people" for bad things to happen to. But, wait maybe they mean why did bad stuff happen to Jesus, who was a good person? Wait I know this one. It's in John somewhere. John three verse uhmmmmm. John 3:16! That's it! "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." So the only truly good person to live suffered and died to allow God to forgive our sins². Well maybe they mean "relatively" good people. Unfortunately that doesn't work either. Even yours truly, who's such a fine example of morality that even Mother Teressa (God rest her soul) could have learnt a thing or two from me, falls far short of the standards which God judges to be "good". So, in reality, we all suck and deserve whatever's coming to us.

Next up on "Stumper Questions for Christians that are Actually Easy to Answer" we have:

Could God make a taco so hot even he couldn't eat it?

Looks like it's going to be an exciting episode, make sure you don't miss it. You wouldn't want to be the only kid on the block that didn't know the answer to this fundamental question of the Christian faith would you now?

1. Yes, it will be at least a mini-series, I'm already working on the next two questions. Also, feel free to send me any other "stumper questions" that you come across.

2. Why this was required is really beyond the scope of my blog. That is actually a difficult, but answerable, question and I'm really just picking the low hanging fruit in this series.
