I watched this film on
Saturday night. The Plot (at least of the first half I actually watched) can be
summarised as "Matt Damon goes nuts." Oh, sure there was more to it than that, but
that was the part that stood out. To explain how bad it was by the hour thirty
point I did not care what happened enough to continue to sit and watch it. The
family members that did watch the rest of it tell me that I made the right
decision.

I watched this movie last
night, and unfortunately I must say that I didn't really enjoy it. It billed
itself as a "black comedy", and while it certainly succeeded on the first part,
calling it a comedy is really a bit of a stretch, it simply wasn't all that
funny. Don't get me wrong, I actually quite enjoy a good black comedy (for
instance Plots with a
View), this movie just didn't do it for me. For sure there was some
funny moments, the "reading" of the will was hilarious for instance, but these
couple of scenes where ultimately let down by the rest of the film. In summary:
if your looking for a black comedy watch Plots with a View instead.

This movie tries to get away
[...]

This movie tries to get away
with it's lousy plot by being an "action" movie, and while the action scenes
where technically brilliant, they where only around a third of the film. That
means the majority of the time was spent on plot, and the plot... well lets just
say it could be better. This movie has several plot holes and instances of plot
induced stupidity. Note that from here on this review may contain spoilers.
*
*
*

Action wise it would have made for a fine super-hero flick if they had just
dropped the curvy bullets. I really don't understand why they had them in it,
they served no point to the plot, and the few action scenes that contained them
could have dropped them without harm. I'm willing to allow the super speed and
strength, and even perhaps shooting the other guys bullets out of the air, we're
talking about characters that I've already acknowledged are
super-<strike>heroes</strike> beings, but the curvy bullets are going too
far.

Let's start with the first instance of plot induced stupidity: Mr. X. The
story is that Mr. X has just taken out these four mooks, and then one of their
phones rings, so he picks up, and starts talking to someguy called Cross. Their
conversation goes for a little while and then ends like so:

Mr. X: "Don't send sheep to kill a wolf."
Cross: "I didn't they where just the distraction."

At which point Mr. X, our super assassin, with massively-heightened reflexes, takes a
couple seconds to look down at his feet to see a cross, and then stands there
until he gets shot. Now I don't know about you, but if I discovered that I'd
been lead into a trap and that I was now standing on an X, I'd probably
move.

And then to make it worse this happens again, with a different character
later in the film.

The other main example of plot induced stupidity is right near the end: Our
hero has revealed to the rest of the assassins that Sloan has been making up
kill orders for his own profit. So what does Sloan do to counter this, he reveals
his ace in the hole:

Drum-roll please.

He has kill orders for all of the assassins. You know the same kill orders
that he has already admitted to being willing to falsify for his own personal
benefit. Now sure this could be the last futile attempt to save himself, except
that not one the half a dozen other people room even thinks about this
for half a second.

And finally we have The Loom. I mean I'm sure if I ever discover some
pattern in random values I'm going to assume it's a list of people to kill.
Isn't that the logical conclusion?

Over the weekend I saw a couple of good movies, first up on Saturday was American Gangster, an
exceptional movie based on a true story of an American detective trying to catch
a drug dealer. It's quite an interesting story, so I'd recommend you read up on
what happened even if you don't see the film, try the Wikipedia articles on Frank Lucas and
Richie Roberts and also
check out the various linked sources in those articles.

Next up on Sunday I saw The
Ultimate Gift, which while not at all my usual style of movie was an
excellent feel-good movie. I strongly recommend both these movies too you.

I watched the film "To End
All Wars" on Saturday night. This was an interesting film about the treatment
of Allied POW by the Japanese. One
thing I found amusing about the film though was when "Yanker" was talking to one
of the other prisoners he said that he was not a "Kamikaze". That word was
introduced to the English language in the period from 1944 to 1945, while this
movie was set a couple of years before that. I know I'm nit-picking, but still I
think it's funny.

Other than that the movie was reasonably good and it reminded me why I hate
evolution so much. Some of the most heinous, state-approved, war crimes on
record were committed by the Japanese and Germans in World War II. Both these
cultures are known for their hospitality and politeness, but they honestly
believed evolution and that they were more highly evolved than the other races
around them. Therefore they believed that they were justified in committing all
manner of atrocities. Yes, the Japanese also believed all other races the be
their inferiors. See this short
article and if you want to read the article it references try here.

Environment

I was watching Planet of the
Apes last night (OK, it was actually already morning, but I hadn't been to
sleep yet :-) ), and I noticed that the main ape hero made comments on
human (i.e. real humans on Earth) great and harsh mistreatment of apes.
Leo, our (human) hero, made no attempt to counter these claims, but instead
seemed to agree that humans putting non-sapient [un-intelligent] animals
in zoos*, was worse, not just as bad, but
worse, than intelligent apes enslaving and murdering (sapient) humans.

I suppose that's reasonable, I mean hey their only humans they don't matter
anywhere near as much as a dumb ape.

I know some people will think I'm just being silly about this, but I think it
is a good example of this strange effect in our culture where doing something
"bad" to an animal** has a greater negative
emotional response than doing the same thing to a human, and therefore tends to
be seen as worse. Which is a sad comment on our culture indeed.

* Which admittedly would not be suitable way to treat
sapient creatures (like humans), but is acceptable for dumb, non-sapient
animals.

** This mostly applies to cute animals (like
kittens), and nearly always does not apply to icky animals (like
spiders).

PS. I have a strong belief that all animals have certain basic rights, OK
mostly just one, the right to be killed humanely before being eaten. :-)
